I was learning Japanese and wanted to see what names I could make out of words I liked. Shiro took about fifteen seconds. Kuro took two months. I had my heart set on a rooster for him, given his temper. A friend from Japan helped me find his surname. Since I already had white for Shiro, I went with black for Kuro.

Torpeda got his name because the word made me laugh. All the shark and lightning stuff came later. That’s him sitting out front, number six, shark sneakers pointing straight at you.
